Android Privacy Settings Worth Reviewing on Every New Smartphone

Setting up a new Android phone is usually exciting. You install your favourite apps, sign in to your accounts, restore photos, and start customising the home screen. Privacy settings, however, are easy to skip during that process.

That can be a mistake.

Modern Android gives users detailed control over which apps can access location, the camera, microphone, photos, nearby devices, and other personal information. The challenge is simply knowing which options deserve attention.

Reviewing a few important Android Privacy Settings when you first set up a smartphone can help reduce unnecessary data access without making the phone difficult to use. You do not need to disable everything. The goal is to give each app only the access it genuinely needs.

1. Start With the Permission Manager

The Permission Manager is one of the best places to begin because it lets you review app access by permission category rather than checking every application individually.

On supported Android devices, you can usually find it under Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission Manager. From there, you can see which applications have access to areas such as the camera, microphone, contacts, location, phone, SMS, photos, and nearby devices.

Pay particular attention to permissions that seem unrelated to an app’s purpose.

A navigation app requesting location access makes sense. A simple calculator asking for your microphone deserves a closer look.

You do not necessarily need to deny every unusual permission, but it is worth understanding why an application wants it.

2. Review Location Access Carefully

Location is useful for maps, weather apps, ride-hailing services, food delivery, and fitness tracking. That does not mean every application needs continuous access.

Android can offer several location permission levels, including access all the time, only while using the app, asking each time, or denying access completely. You may also be able to choose between precise and approximate location.

For many apps, Allow only while using the app is a sensible starting point.

A restaurant app, for example, may need your location while you search for nearby branches, but there is usually little benefit in allowing permanent background access unless a specific feature requires it.

Approximate location is also worth considering for apps such as weather services that do not need to know your exact position.

3. Check Camera and Microphone Permissions

Camera and microphone access deserves special attention because these sensors can capture highly personal information.

Android displays an indicator near the top of the screen when an app uses the camera or microphone. On supported devices, tapping that indicator can also show which app or service is currently accessing the sensor.

If something looks unexpected, check the app’s permissions.

Android also provides system-level privacy controls that can disable camera or microphone access across the device. These controls can be useful when you want an additional layer of privacy temporarily.

The practical approach is not to permanently disable both sensors. Instead, give access only to applications that have a clear reason to use them.

A video-calling app obviously needs both. A wallpaper app probably does not.

4. Use the Privacy Dashboard to See What Apps Actually Access

Permission lists tell you what apps are allowed to access. The Privacy Dashboard can help show what they have actually been using.

Android’s Privacy Dashboard lets users review recent permission activity for categories such as location, camera, and microphone, then jump directly to the relevant permission settings if something looks unusual.

This makes it especially useful a few days after setting up a new phone.

You may have granted several permissions quickly during installation without thinking much about them. After using the phone normally, the dashboard gives you an opportunity to see whether those choices still make sense.

For example, if an app you barely use repeatedly appears under location activity, you may decide to reduce its access.

5. Review Android’s Ad Privacy Controls

Advertising is another area worth checking because Android includes controls over some of the information used for advertising and measurement.

Current Android settings can include options for Ad Topics, App-Suggested Ads, and Ad Measurement. These can generally be found under Settings > Google > All services > Ads > Ads privacy, although availability can depend on Android version and device.

You can review or turn these options off if you prefer not to use them.

Android also provides controls related to the advertising ID on supported versions, including the ability to reset or delete it.

Changing these settings does not mean you will suddenly stop seeing advertisements. The main purpose is to reduce or change how certain advertising-related information is used.

6. Hide Sensitive Lock-Screen Notifications

Notifications are convenient, but they can also reveal more information than you realise.

A locked phone sitting on a desk might display incoming messages, verification codes, email previews, banking alerts, appointment information, or other private content.

Android allows users to control what appears on the lock screen. Depending on the device, you can hide sensitive notification content or prevent lock-screen notifications from appearing entirely.

This setting is especially worth reviewing if you regularly leave your phone around colleagues, customers, friends, or family members.

You can still receive notifications without displaying the full message to anyone who happens to look at the screen.

7. Let Android Manage Permissions for Unused Apps

Many people install applications, use them once, and then forget about them for months.

Android includes protections for this situation. For apps that have not been used for a long time, the system can revoke permissions, stop background activity, remove temporary files, and prevent notifications.

For individual apps, you may also see an option such as Pause app activity if unused.

Leaving this protection enabled is useful for most people.

An old travel app, event app, or shopping app should not necessarily retain access to sensitive permissions indefinitely simply because you forgot it was installed.

It is still worth manually reviewing old apps occasionally and uninstalling anything you no longer need.

8. Consider Private Space for Sensitive Apps

Some newer Android devices support Private Space, which creates a separate area for applications you do not want easily visible or accessible from the main app list.

Google describes Private Space as a separate environment where apps can be isolated from the rest of the phone and protected with an additional lock. On supported devices, it can also be hidden when locked.

This can be useful for banking apps, private communication tools, work accounts, or other sensitive applications.

It should not replace a strong screen lock, but it can provide another layer of separation when multiple people occasionally handle your phone.

You do not need to become a security expert to improve smartphone privacy. Reviewing a handful of important Android Privacy Settings can make a meaningful difference.

Start with app permissions, then check location access, camera and microphone use, the Privacy Dashboard, advertising controls, lock-screen notifications, and unused apps. If your device supports Private Space, consider using it for particularly sensitive applications.

The best privacy setup is not the one that disables everything. It is the one that gives apps enough access to work properly without granting unnecessary permissions. After setting up a new Android phone, spend a few minutes reviewing these options—and repeat the check occasionally as you install new apps.
